I can't necessarily answer "why we have emotions" since I'm not God, but I'll happily give it my best shot.
I think what you're trying to ask is "why do we feel pain?" I doubt that anyone would question the experience of joy because they are too busy being joyful. But the question of why we have pain is pretty common, I think (or sadness for the matter).
I can't necessarily say why God gave us these emotions, but I do think life is better with them. I don't want a dull existence devoid of feelings. The pain of life is but a reflection of the joy we have. To ask for a life devoid of pain and suffering is to negate joy as well.
I think wisdom maybe says to soak in the times of joy as well as you can, and also deal with the pain when it comes. Don't run from pain, it only prolongs it. Realize that this time too will pass, just like your joy did.

I will quote one of my favorite poets:
"Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding.
Even as the stone of the fruit must break, that its heart may stand in the sun, so must you know pain.
And could you keep your heart in wonder at the daily miracles of your life, your pain would not seem less wondrous than your joy;
And you would accept the seasons of your heart, even as you have always accepted the seasons that pass over your fields.
And you would watch with serenity through the winters of your grief.
Much of your pain is self-chosen.
It is the bitter potion by which the physician within you heals your sick self.
Therefore trust the physician, and drink his remedy in silence and tranquillity:
For his hand, though heavy and hard, is guided by the tender hand of the Unseen,
And the cup he brings, though it burn your lips, has been fashioned of the clay which the Potter has moistened with His own sacred tears."
-Kahlil Gibran

Don't worry about why you have emotions. Live in the moment and this season will pass.
